Rail passes represent excellent value for train travellers who are touring around Europe (or parts of it) or making a number of journeys within a short period. They can offer substantial savings over point-to-point tickets, as well as greater flexibility.
The principal pass schemes for Europe are Interrail for residents of Europe, and Eurail for those resident outside Europe. Both schemes have a choice of Global passes covering 31 countries, or One Country Passes for individual countries. Note, however, that you cannot use the pass in your country of residence.
Passes either cover a specified number of consecutive days, or are of the flexi type where you get so many “travel days” within a specific period (there are boxes on the pass where you write each date). Free travel requires the use of a travel day, whereas discounted travel does not.
Passes generally cover the ordinary services of the national rail companies, but supplements often have to be paid for travel on high-speed services, night trains, and “global price” trains. Independent rail operators may not accept passes but may give discounts to pass holders. Extra charges always apply for travel in sleeping cars or couchettes.
Interrail and Eurail
Europe-wide or single-country passes – website: www.interrail.eu www.eurail.com
Anyone of any age can buy a pass, either for pretty much the whole of Europe, or for an individual country. Global passes cover 31 countries of Europe and can either be Continuous passes for a set number of consecutive days or months, or Flexi passes for a certain number of travel days within a period of one or two months (you choose the travel days as you go along, writing the date on the pass). One Country Passes are all flexi passes for a certain number of days within one month (sometimes there is more than one country, as with the Benelux pass).
The two pass schemes (Interrail and Eurail) are now very similar, but Interrail passes are for residents of Europe, whilst Eurail passes are for those resident outside Europe. Turkey, Russia and the CIS countries count as Europe for this purpose. You may need proof of residence.
Passes can be purchased up to eleven months before travel begins. It’s best to buy the pass online or in your own country before travelling, although most passes can also be purchased at major stations in Europe. Note, however, that the new 3 day Global pass cannot be purchased from stations. Recommended retail prices are now the same for both Interrail and Eurail and are in Euros as shown below, but prices may vary between different outlets. At certain times of year special offer prices may be available. All passes are either for second class or first class travel (of course first class passes can also be used to travel in second class).
Passes come with a travel diary which has to be filled in with each journey. You cannot use the pass in your own country of residence. However, with an Interrail Global Pass you can make one outbound and one inbound journey in your country of residence.

Overnight Travel
Passes do not include supplements for travel in sleeping car or couchette accommodation and these have to be purchased separately. Many overnight trains have a global price where the ticket price includes the sleeping accommodation – in these cases pass holders pay a specified supplement or pass holder fare (see below for further details).
Holders of Flexi passes travelling overnight and leaving before midnight need to write the date of departure on the pass, and of course the pass can be used for the whole of that day. Pass holders will not need to activate a second day on their pass for the day of arrival unless they board a second train (but the day of arrival does need to be within the overall validity of the pass). The rule can also be used for late evening trains arriving after midnight. If you need to use a connecting train having arrived overnight it may be worth buying a regular ticket to avoid having to use a travel day.
Note that this is a new rule for 2019 and replaces the previous 7pm rule whereby pass holders had to write the day of arrival on their passes, rather than the day of departure, for night trains departing after 7pm.
Free travel to the border, airport or seaport
Although it is not possible to purchase an Interrail pass for the holder’s own country of residence, a Global pass entitles the holder to two free journeys (one outbound, one inbound) between any station in their country of residence and its border, and airport, or seaport. Each journey must be completed in one day (no overnight stops allowed), at any time within the overall validity of the pass, or include a travel day if using a Flexi pass. Details must be entered in the travel diary.
Supplements and reservation fees
Require for certain types of high-speed or “global price” train.
International day train examples, 2nd class (subject to chance):
France-Italy TGV €38; Berlin-Warszawa Express €4.50; EC Switzerland-Italy €11; Eurostar pass holder fare €30 (€38 in standard premier with 1st class pass); TGV/ICE France-Germany €13; TGV Lyria (France-Switzerland) €34; Thalys €20-€30; TGV Brussels-France €20, SJ Snabbtag Stockholm – Kobenhavn €7.50; IC bus Klagenfurt -Venezia €15-29.
Domestic examples (subject to alteration):
Croatia IC/ICN €3.60.
Czech Republic SC €8.
Finland Pendolino €9.
France TGV €10 limited allocation (otherwise €20), Intercités with compulsory reservation €10.
Hungary IC €3.
Italy FA, FB and FR €10, IC €3.
Norway long-distance trains €6.3.
Poland EIP €10, EIC/TLK free.
Portugal AP/IC €5.
Romania IC/IR €1-4.
Slovakia IC €4.
Slovenia ICS €3.40.
Spain AVE €10, most other long-distance trains €6.50, MD €4.50.
Sweden Snabbtag €7.
Night trains: sleeping accommodation is typically €15 to €75 for a couchette, and €35 to €155 for a berth in a sleeping car. Some trains also include reclining seat. Many night trains are globally priced and fares for pass holders vary widely.
As some of the supplements/pass holders fares can be rather high, it’s worth checking whether a regular advance purchase ticket might be a better option, particularly if booked a month or two ahead. Supplements can often be avoided altogether by taking slower regional trains.
